Book review of Handsome Lying Jerks

Handsome Lying Jerks

By: Elizer Syrus Paule

Handsome Lying Jerks is a prose novel fictional story.
Plot:
One Friday night, July 2007 in Mapleton, South Carolina, the five boys named Edward Lawson, Richard Grayson, Ismail Ambani, Travis Becker and Louis Lockwood went to Jude O'Brien's party.
When the five lads is on their way home, while Edward is being intoxicated and distracting Richard's driving. They saw a man in an all black outfit with a hoodie and a mask that is 30 miles away from them and is nearly to be hit by Richard’s SUV. Luckily Richard still manages not to hit the man up. Due to his preventing not hitting up the man, they ended up hitting a rock that made their car to be broken which have thrown themselves to bushes and cause them severe wounds.
That night is when Edward was lost and the 4 boys lied that they don't know where Edward went when the party was done, instead of telling the truth that they were on an accident and they couldn't find Edward.
This scenario caused the unwanted things to happen. The anonymous stalker labeled as 'E' started sending the four boys threats and black mails through SMS and Emails and E will spill up their secrets if they are not going to do what E was commanding them. For them to be able to save themselves, they try to fix the case without telling the police or any authority. But that resolution of the four made E to manipulate them and made the killings victoriously as well.
Innocent people were killed; their friends, some other people at school even the cop was killed. Even the innocent Quentin Hamilton was suspected as the killer though he was just framed up. The four boys were eager more to find out who the anonymous killer was.
After the burial of Edward Lawson, Mrs. Lawson the mother of Edward gave Richard some stuffs of her son. One thing caught up Richard's attention was the diary of Edward, so he also gets it.
In that diary, they discovered the secret of one another and the most horrifying revelation was Edward is also being threatened by 'E'. When they were near to know who the E was, someone distracted them from downstairs. Unluckily, they left the diary at the bedroom that made E to get the diary to prevent them knowing who the person behind E. The threats and stalking is still ongoing with the four and even at mapleton.
In a game of the football, Cougars of Mapleton High won. For their victorious game, Jude O’Brien announced that there will be a party held at his house and everyone is invited. Including Richard, Louis, Travis and Ismail, No one has ever predicted that there would be killings once again.
That night Travis didn't come to Jude's party. He went to Brent's house with Willie. When Travis went inside he saw his boyfriend dead. When he went outside to call help, he saw Willie dead as well.
In Jude's party Jade Anderson, Ismail's girlfriend was found dead inside the comfort room and that made the people at the party to go home. Even Sebastian Petroff was killed as well. The only people left were Richard, Ismail, Louis, Claire, Furon and Jude. While Brittany was been kidnapped by E. Richard was searching all around and until E called him and told him that he need to bring Edward's diary and for exchange, E will give his girlfriend back, and they will meet at Jude's cabin. Jude gave Richard a ride way to his cabin.
Richard discovered such a terrible thing knowing that Jude is E, their tormentor and stalker. Jude revealed everything about ‘E’. He even said the he is not the only one but Furon is also his accomplice. The E-Club is a club where all the members do hate Edward and where people are good in lying. But he denied killing Edward.
That time, Richard made a way for him and his girlfriend to escape. He hit Jude with his iPhone on Jude's for head. Unluckily, Jude still manages to wake up. They chase one another, until Richard got into a room and there he saw Clint being tied up.  Jude caught Richard inside the room and there they wrestle. Clint tried to help Richard but Jude killed Clint.
While Louis and Claire are searching for some evidences in Jude's library, someone shoot Claire at the heart.  Louis found out that Furon Sylvester is E. Furon also revealed about his accomplice, Jude. When Furon is about to shoot Louis on the head, a samurai stabbed on Furon's chest that made him die. It was Travis killed Furon. After they killed Furon, the two find Ismail and went their way to Jude's cabin to rescue Richard and Brittany.
Back to Richard and Jude, Richard finally killed Jude. He shoots Jude at his chest. Ismail, Travis and Louis untied Brittany. When they went to Richard, they saw Richard killed Jude. But they warned Richard that evil people have longer lives. So, Richard shoot Jude twice to make sure that he is dead.
After they killed Jude and Furon, everything went good again, people in mapleton feel safe again. The emo dude, Quentin Hamilton is released in Jail and achieved the justice for he was just framed up by the killer. The four boys are still up with the investigations. Sometimes, they are being featured by some news channels.
After the miserable experience, the four boys, Louis, Richard, Travis and Ismail are having a small party for they survived and killed the two killers who was been dismaying their whole city. But an unwanted thing happened again. Steve called Ismail quivering and he told that Richard needs to go to Brittany's house.  Seeming something bad happened to Brittany. Then the four boys right away went to Brittany's house.
When they reached their way, they saw a huge number of people. There are police, ambulance and Brittany's family. Richard found her girlfriend lying on a stretcher dead. And again, they received a text from their anonymous tormentor, 'E'.

The four main characters in Handsome Lying Jerks are;
Richard Grayson, He is 18 yrs. Old. Richard was a victim of masochism. His parents sent him to rehab at the age of 14 and redeemed himself at the age of 16.
Ismail Ambani, is a 17-year-old boy who is a half American and a half Pakistani. He's darkest secret is losing his virginity at the age of 15.
Travis Becker, a 17-year-old boy. He is a tall with a brown messy hair. One of his greatest secret is his sexuality. He is a gay. He has a crush on the most popular boy in school and is his best friend, Edward Lawson.
Louis Lockwood, a 17-year-old British boy. He has a Pearl white - complexion. His secret is he never kissed or even had a girlfriend before.
It all began on the Friday night, July 2007 in Mapleton, South Carolina when Edward was lost and the terrifying thing started to happen. Most of the killing happened in Mapleton High and some of the houses of the victim. The last killing was in Jude O'Brien's house and at his cabin during his Friday night party.
The theme of the story is, “Be careful on who you share your secrets with.”
Every individual has a secret hiding behind themselves. We all have the darkest and the simplest secrets. For us to share our feelings with, we are finding someone who we can share our secrets. But the thing is, before saying something to a certain person. Make sure that person is a trust worthy and not going to black mail or use your secret to threat you. You need to know that certain person first before revealing everything about yourself.
For me some events in the story may really happen in true life. Likewise, Extra-judicial killings are happening in our country. Every day the news has issues about the killings being committed. The authorities don't even know if the people who are being killed were true drug addicts.
Accusing a wrong person, it always happens in court. It's a typical thing when a rich or influential family reversed the truth and passes it to the innocent people for them not to be in jailed. Or it may be also framing up someone.
Last thing is black mailing, threatening emails or SMS is being used by scanners most of all in this era, for us to give them what they want. We all know in 21st century we are more on using technologies.

My most favorite part is when Quentin was framed up by the killer. It is a cool thing, the way on how the killer carefully killed Quentin's girlfriend without living any evidences. The way he planned everything fits to what the two people are doing that night. Quentin has an earphone and listening to music, while his girlfriend sleeping. The killer used that chance to inject Quentin with a sleeping chemical. So that Quentin can't be woken up if his girlfriend screams in pain.  Everything is made by a smart person.
The least part that I like the most is, when Richard lied instead of saying the truth to Edward's parents. If Richard did not to such thing, I think Edward wouldn't be killed and he may be rescued earlier and the anonymous texter won’t bother the four boys and killings would not be committed.
The four boys left the diary in the bedroom. They shouldn't leave it. Because they know that E is smart and he can do anything without living any evidences.

I would like to end the story by Richard not killing Jude. The four boys just decided to give Jude to police and they also told Officer Shay about their stalkers. When Jude was brought to the jail, policemen and detectives are forcing him to spill up everything about the 'Elite Club'. When Jude spilled up everything, He said that Richard was the one who killed Edward that Friday night. But the reason he also wants to kill Richard because Richard wants to leave E club. All of the accomplices were brought in jail including Richard.  Travis, Ismail and Louis felt a strong ire on their hearts for they can't believe that Richard was the one who killed Edward. From that time, the mapleton felt safe again and all the criminals were sentenced a lifetime in Jail.
After the hearing of the case, someone called Travis, a voice that is familiar. Saying that, "You all accused a wrong person once again."
The end
I rate Handsome Lying Jerks 9. Honestly, I do not really read novels; this novel inspired me to read not because it’s required. But it shows me that novel is not boring at all. Some may be boring depends on my taste but this one really proved me that novel is also catchy. About the story, I like it so much. It’s an ‘Urban legend’ inspired story. The story also helped me to discover unfamiliar words and that really helped me in making my poems and essays. I love everything. I love being terror by the scenes, and the breath taking fights caused me to freak out. The story made me to analyze who the killer was and always end up having a wrong guess and that makes the story more exciting.  I would like to recommend this to people for having an astonishing concept of the story and to my sister who likes suspense. I even told some of my friends to read this book.  I am thankful that I read such a novel like this and I am also hoping that sooner or later the sequel two will be finished.

Plot:

Seok-Woo, a fund manager who was divorced with his wife earlier, decides to take his daughter Su-an to her mother in Busan as her birthday gift. They board the KTX (a Korean High-speed rail) at a station in Seoul which is also occupied by the tough working-class husband Sang-hwa and his pregnant wife Seong-kyeong, a high school baseball team, rich but selfish CEO Yon-suk, elderly sisters In-gil and Jon-gil, and a homeless man.
As the train departs, a spasmodic young woman boards the train with a bite wound on her leg and is succumbed. Zombified, she attacks a passing female train attendant who attempted to resuscitate her, and the zombie infection spreads. They infect the baseball team and the other passengers, except Yong-guk, his girlfriend Jin-hee, and two other students fleeing to the front car. News broadcast reports about the zombie outbreak around Korea. The train stops at Daejeon which is seemingly void. While the passengers disembark, they come across the infected military zone and retreat. Zombies break through the room above the train, causing Seong-kyeong, In-gil and the homeless man to separate to the rear train and into the bathroom with Su-an. Realizing the dire situation they are in, the conductor operates the train to Busan, where news of successful decontamination has been heard.
Seok-Woo realized that Su-an was not at her seat. He races with Sang-hwa and Yong-guk to rescue his daughter and others before being chased back by the horde of infected passengers. They manage to reach the front train car, but Yon-suk and the passengers had locked the car door before them, fearing infection. Yong-guk tries to break the front door open while Seok-Woo and Sang-hwa try to block the zombies entering their cabin. However, Sang-hwa is bitten. He tells Seok-Woo to flee and asks him to take care of Seong-kyeong as he begins to transform into a zombie. Just as Yong-guk and Seok-Woo force the door open hindered by stubborn people, In-gil sacrifices herself to buy the others' time to escape to the safe cabin, disheartening Jong-gil.
Outraged, Seok-Woo punches Yon-suk in retaliation, but Yon-suk mistakenly claims that the latter is infected due to splattered blood over his shirt. Yon-suk and the other passengers fearfully demand the escapees to isolate to another car and Jin-hee joins them. Jong-gil realizes that her sister, who is seen almost zombified behind the door, had took her own life for the sake of others' lives, and she angrily sees the selfishness of the other passengers behind her. She thanks her sister and opens the door, letting the zombies rush in and kill the passengers except Yon-suk and an attendant seeking shelter in one of the restrooms. Seok-woo gets a call from one of his employees who said that the outbreak was caused by one of their projects.
Due to a train wreck at East Daegu train station, the survivors are forced to stop. As they try to find another train, they are attacked. Yon-Suk gives the attendant to the zombies to escape. He then throws Jin-Hee to a zombie to save himself. Despondent Yong-guk tries to comfort infected Jin-Hee but is attacked. The conductor who activates the last locomotive saves Yon-suk captured by zombies, but Yon-suk runs to the train, leaving the conductor to be consumed. After the homeless man defends others from zombies to death, Seok-Woo, Su-an and Seong-kyeong successfully board the locomotive. However, Yon-Suk had been inside the engine room in the verge of infection. Seok-Woo fights zombified Yon-suk off, but he is bitten before he throws him off the train.
Not wanting to kill his fellow survivors, Seok-woo pleas Seong-kyeong and Su-an that he needs to let himself go, agonizing his daughter. He commits suicide by falling down the train before he is transformed. Later, Seong-kyeong and Su-an stop at the blocked tunnel's entrance to Busan and walk through it. At the exit, soldiers spot two of them in the tunnel. But since they cannot identify them in the darkness, their commander orders them to shoot. As the soldiers prepare to fire, one of them hears a child singing a song, realizing that both are not zombies but survivors. They rush for the rescue while Su-an tearfully sings.

Reaction:
It's an amazing movie that I've ever watched from all of the Korean movie this year. It's a breath taking movie. While I'm watching it's like the zombies are going to get me though I'm just watching it. Makes me freak out a lot of times. This movie made me torture my younger brother! hahaha i was pulling his hair while screaming, "The Zombie! wahhhh, run for your life! Run!" Gosh, hhaahah my feels. I get too disappointed with the end of the story. All my life watching it, i thought Ma dong sok and Gong Yu will survive. I am broken. This kind of an exciting feels that there will be a part two of train to Busan. I'm not gonna miss it on cinema!  I am totally giggling when i saw Jung yung mi, cause she totally looks like Krystal my bias in F(x). This is all for now for my movie review. For those people who haven't still watch this, watch it now. i swear it'll make your day zombilicious! Thanks!
